Microsoft Security Essentials does provide basic protection for windows. I use windows xp and I feel that a 2 way firewall should have been provided with this program. Window firewall does not offer enough protection. Otherwise, this program does not slow down my web surfing at all. My only complaint other than not having a firewall is the scanning time. It takes 2 hours for Microsoft Security Essentials to do a full scan. This is what I found totally unacceptable. Otherwise, I feel that this is probably the best free program available.
